The Kingdom Saragas

Bericht door Larissa » 17-10-2014 23:35

Saragas is a fairly large kingdom, ruled by the still fairly young king Castiel. He is known as the blessed king, for he was born with mysterious powers, bestowed upon him by a new deity referred to as either the Lady or the Great Mother. The king's power is that he somehow knows when and where there is trouble in his kingdom, and he can cause small miracles in the locations he travels to.

The kingdom has several rivers running through it, the main ones being the Esdan and the Blackfen river. There's a the Iosaer Mountains to the west border, which is said to now be the home or Orc raiders. (and dwarves hidden in their underground strongholds). To the north, there is the Asten Sea. There are several valleys and hills. To the South-West, there's an area known as the Charred Waste. This is a dead wasteland, dry and lifeless, except for the mysterious Jade Forest.

The people in Saragas, especially the area around Alajana's Rest, is not too fond of other races than humans. The less a race looks like a human, the less they will like it. In Alajana's Rest, this is the worst. To the point where orcs and the like live in the slums, and basically have no future.

Alajana's Rest

Bericht door Larissa » 17-10-2014 23:47

The history of Alajana's Rest

Alajana was once a great, legendary and powerful hero. A mage and a warrior, protector of the innocent and savior of many. Alajana fought off the undead plagues in the mountains to the north, defeated the wicked king who kept the kingdom in his grasp and at last she defeated the ancient dragon, who had his lair on a stone platform in a desert to the far south. With the treasure of the lair, Alajana funded a city for people to settle. A save haven for all dangers the world might still have to face. A place where there would be peace. But, nobody is immortal in the end, only the gods. And Alajana, though powerful, was not one of them. When her time came, she greeted death as an old friend. Her spirit lives on in the afterlife, in legends and in the hearts of many. Her body was buried in a tomb beneath this city, where she still rests. Some legends say that, when the world is in great danger, she will rise from her grave once more and protect the people. This might just be a legend, of course. But who knows?

Ironically, though the city was build for people to find peace, the city was a frequent target of wars, and even now there's quite some unrest in the city with its frequent riots.

Politics

The city is ruled by the Council, consisting of the heads of the temples, the heads of the noble families, and the Guild masters.

The families
The families

There are several noble families in Alajana’s Rest. Listed below are the eleven richest, most influential, and most interesting of the families. Each of these families has an interesting story to them. Several have problems, alliances, histories, and other things with one another. Each of these families can be interesting for the players to learn more about, or to try and get them as allies in case of need.

The family Vaughan

“In Vengeance Joy”

Their family crest is a phoenix on a light purple shield with a darker purple, horizontal stripe. It represents their ideal of justice and victory, fierceness in battle.

For many decades, the Vaughan family has a vendetta with the Santini family. Though neither of the families recalls what this vendetta is truly about, they have been taught to hate the Santini family. Both families have attempted to murder people from the other family.

Amron Vaughan: Head of the family. He is an elderly man with silvery grey hair and a thick mustache. He is a veteran guard captain. Younger generations of swordsmen can still come to him for advice in how to train and improve their skills. He is not very fond of magic users. It is clear he was very respected, since even the orcs, most renowned warriors, seem to respect him.

Erenn Vaughan: Son of Amron Vaughan. He will be the head of the family when his father passes away. Brown hair, sharp amber colored eyes. Current captain of the city guard. He is serious and wants people to live up to the laws of the city. Sometimes he has a tendency to abuse his power as guard captain. Is a big man is all ways possible; both tall and muscular. He does not quite look like a man of whom you do not want to be on his bad side.

Mara Vaughan: Wife of Erenn Vaughan, daughter of a merchant with a lot of influence on the sea. Or so they say. Only few people know she is in fact the daughter of a pirate who managed to make her way into a noble family. She has short, black hair and bright, green eyes.

Jessica Vaughan: daughter of Mara and Vaughan. She is twelve years old and has a pet hawk names Johnny. She has the same brown hair as her father, and the sharpness of his eyes, though her eye color is more similar to her mother’s.

Arnald Vaughan: oldest child of the Vaughan family. 19 years old. Dark brown hair to his shoulders, amber colored eyes. He has a rather slender build, but he is actually quite strong. Training as a paladin of Heironeous, and due to the status of his family, he will likely be the personal guard of a high priest once his apprenticeship is over.

Emma Vaughan: light hair and eyes. With only three years, she is the youngest of the Vaughan family.

The family Fogg

“Unity”

Fogg, Herschel, and Silverkin have been friends for as long as everybody can recall. They will stand up for each other at all times, no matter what one of the families might do, they will cover up for each other. Befriend one families, and you can basically consider yourself allies with the other two as well.

As one might be able to guess, especially when up to date about the bonds between families, their motto is a part of the three-part motto of the families Fogg, Silverkin, and Herschel. Together it reads: “Unity, Loyalty, Victory.” Their families have a long and tight-knit history together, having been friends for a long time due to a very old alliance. Occasionally marrying one of their children into another family.

They have an unusual animal on their crest, namely an ant. After all, which animal is more focused on working in a team than an ant? Their shield is blue, and has a downwards, silver triangle on it.

Elizabeth Fogg: Elizabeth is calm and polite. She, like her husband, has a way with words that makes people listen to her quite easily.

Andrew Fogg: Andrew has quite a high voice for a man. When listening to him for an extended period of time, this can get a little annoying. Andrew is bald. He likes to collect hunting trophies. The rarer the hunted creature, the better.

Tomas Fogg: Tomas turned quite pious after an unfortunate near-death experience when out hunting with a group of mercenaries. If he had the chance, he would donate all of his money, and that of his parents, to the temple of Pelor.

Michael Fogg: Unlike his little brother, Michael is calm and quite lazy. If he got the chance, he would sleep all day and do absolutely nothing at all. He hasn’t bothered learning a trade yet and never went further than a few miles out of the city. This is, however, not because he is lazy, but because he is afraid of the things that might be out there. Especially since his older brother’s near death experience.

Oliver Fogg: Oliver likes Mara Farro. In in a few years this is still the same, the family will propose a marriage between the two families. Oliver is ten years old. He is a jumpy and hyperactive kid.

The family Silverkin

“Loyalty”

The animal on their crest is a wolf, symbol for staying loyal to their “pack”, in the case of the family Silverkin, symbol for their loyalty towards the other two families of their trinity.

Fogg, Herschel, and Silverkin have been friends for as long as everybody can recall. They will stand up for each other at all times, no matter what one of the families might do, they will cover up for each other. Befriend one families, and you can basically consider yourself allies with the other two as well.

Together it reads: “Unity, Loyalty, Victory.” Their families have a long and tight-knit history together, having been friends for a long time due to a very old alliance. Occasionally marrying one of their children into another family.

Gileon Silverkin: A tall man with brown hair and large brown eyes. A proud man, but not so proud it would be mistaken for arrogance. He squints a bit, as if his vision is not too great. Gileon is forty-four years old and the “product” of a marriage between his father, Eric Silverkin, and Gwendoline Herschel. Both died ten years ago.

Maria Silverkin: Formerly Maria Fogg. Maria is a quiet woman, forty years old. Her amber colored eyes seem closer to orange in certain lighting, quite an unusual eye color amongst humans. Her necklace has a very unusual gem in it. It was a present from William and Alys Herschel, given to her on a fancy party not that long ago.

Julian Silverkin: Julian looks just like his father, except he is slightly taller than him, standing 6ft.5’ tall. He is proud, like his father, but his short temper gets him into trouble every now and then. He is fascinated by magic, and often hangs out around Antesos Albronda’s magic shop. He is one of the few people to know Antesos’ secret. Julian promised not to tell anyone if Antesos would teach him about magic.

The family Fowler

“Truth protects the faithful ones”

Since they only have reacquired their status as nobility a short while ago, their crest is still in the making. The animal on their crest will be a butterfly, symbol for the changes that happened in their family.

Gilan Fowler: Due to a lucky incident, Gilan managed to regain the noblemen status his family lost a few decades ago. With unusual luck, Gilan managed to prove his family was tricked into a complot that caused them to lose their status, and another family to gain their status. But now their honor has been restored. He has spiky brown hair to his shoulders, and since restoring his status, his brown eyes always seem to be laughing.

Eleanor Fowler: Eleanor is glad with her new status as nobility. She whistles a lot and is in an exceptionally good mood. Nothing seems to be able to bring her down. Eleanor is very thin, and rather short too. She looks like a strong wind can easily blow her away. She has long, straight, black hair and very light grey eyes. Her eyes almost look like they have no color at all.

The Family Albronda

“Magic is Power, Knowledge is Victory”

They have a roof-shaped line on their crest. The blue colors on their crest suggest calm and coolness. There’s an owl on their crest, sitting on a crystal ball.

Katherina Albronda: Narrow face, long, braided brown hair, grey eyes. High priestess of the temple of Zarus. A very proud, towards arrogant woman. Katherina has a strong dislike towards non-humans. Cares more about the wealth of her own people than what’s best for the city.

Edward Albronda: Was Katherina’s wife. Died in a riot in the slums with an axe in his throat. His grandfather worked as court wizard and advisor to the king, now his uncle does.

Antesos Albronda: Owner of the magic shop. Blue eyes and light blond hair. He is a bit quiet and timid. He seems to want to get away from his mother’s influence, but is unable to do so. Antesos fell in love with an elf who purchased an item of him a few months ago. Though they meet up in secret occasionally, he doesn’t know where she resides or where she came from.

The family Herschel

“Victory”

As one might be able to guess, especially when up to date about the bonds between families, their motto is a part of the three-part motto of the families Fogg, Silverkin, and Herschel. Together it reads: “Unity, Loyalty, Victory.” Their families have a long and tight-knit history together, having been friends for a long time due to a very old alliance. Occasionally marrying one of their children into another family.

Fogg, Herschel, and Silverkin have been friends for as long as everybody can recall. They will stand up for each other at all times, no matter what one of the families might do, they will cover up for each other. Befriend one families, and you can basically consider yourself allies with the other two as well.

The animal on their crest is a swan. The colors of the shield are silver and dark green. It has a horizontal cross on it. The cross is green, the shield a silvery grey.

Alys Herschel: A small, delicate looking woman, round face, wavy chestnut brown hair down to her chest and hazel colored eyes. She is currently with a child, and by the looks of it, the child will be born in not too much time.

William Herschel: Some time ago, when traveling around, William found some very unusual gems. One he had made into a necklace for Maria Silverkin, one into a necklace for his wife, and the others he tried to sell to Antesos. Antesos found the gems are magical, but they are so rare he has no clue what the gems are and what they can do. They are with the Scholars for research now. He has brown to black hair and dark blue eyes.

The family Farro

“Trade flows in our veins like water in a river”

The animal on their crest is a raven. It is portrayed on a dark red shield with a dark blue, horizontal stripe in the middle.

The MacGowans and the Farro’s are not exactly enemies, but they are rivals in their business as merchants. Now that the daughter of the MacGowans and the son of the Farro’s have eloped, however, both families offer a reward for the son. MacGowan wants him dead, Farro just wants him back.

Amanda Farro: Now that her husband is busy getting their son back safely, she took over business, trading with people in the city, in the rest of the kingdom, and even beyond the borders of the kingdom. She is currently trying to get a deal for some exotic goods.

Horace Farro: Horace worries about his son’s safety. He doesn’t quite approve of him eloping with the daughter of his rival, and he is afraid his rival will go through with his plan of offering a reward for Elias’ death. The man has the money to pay for mercenaries. Which is exactly why he too is offering a reward for his son, but not to have him killed, but for his safe return.

Elias Farro: Eloped with Rose MacGowan. His father offers a reward for his return. It is unknown whether he is aware of the double “bounty” on his head. Elias Farro is twenty-one years old. His eyes are as dark as his hair.

Mara Farro: Mara finds it kind of romantic and interesting her older brother ran away with the girl he loves. A forbidden love, just as in the tales. Mara hopes, however, that her brother’s love story will have a happy ending. She is a young girl and, clearly, a bit of a daydreamer. So far, she hasn’t shown any interest in the business of her parents.

The family Santini

“Truth, King and Country”

A noble, staggering steed is the animal on their crest. The steed it white, the shield is black with a red, horizontal line.

Matthew Santini: Matthew has a bit of a nervous eye twitch. Possibly a result of a more recent assassination attempt. He looks like he hasn’t had proper rest in a couple of days. Not only is this visible, but also… smell able.

Aeryn Santini: Aeryn has a for this area unusual skin color. Not strange if you learn she came from across the sea. Though she has lived here for several years now, she doesn’t speak the common tongue very well. Or maybe she does, but you can’t hear it over her foreign accent.

Cecilia Santini: A polite young woman. She wonders just what her family’s vendetta with the Vaughan family comes from, but this is a question only her dead ancestors could answer, something that is not going to happen.

Lucy Santini: Lucy was born blind, and though this is unfortunate, she was gifted with a very strong hearing, beautiful voice and a talent for music. Lucy is a student in the Entertainers District, where she is studying to become a bard/musician.

The family Gaci

“Our line prevails”

The animal on their crest is an elk, symbol for the power the family once had, and their belief they will always remain a powerful family in Alajana’s Rest. The shield is dark green and has a dark purple square in the middle.

Morys Gaci: Older man with bushy grey hair and light blue eyes. He passed away recently, after hearing his son disappeared with an artifact, the strange sightings near Faliene, and how all went quiet.

Edit Gaci: Raven black hair and green eyes. Edit is a somewhat older woman already. She was heartbroken when her husband passed away. Now that her son and only child is missing, and with the strange things going on, she is worried about his safety. And much more than just that. She speaks quickly when asked about her son and her worries, tries to avoid the subject.

Minas Gaci: Raven black hair touching his lower neck, bright blue-green eyes. Last in line of his family. Now that he is missing too, it might be the end of a line. Quite ironic, considering the words on the family sigil.

The family MacGowan

“Gold is the city’s blood”

The animal on their crest is a magpie, symbolizing their “affinity” with shiny things. The shield has earthy colors.

The MacGowans and the Farro’s are not exactly enemies, but they are rivals in their business as merchants. Now that the daughter of the MacGowans and the son of the Farro’s have eloped, however, both families offer a reward for the son. MacGowan wants him dead, Farro just wants him back.

Christopher MacGowan: Renowned trader. He has reddish brown hair and green eyes. Most distinctive about him is his beard. Though he is a human, his looks actually remind one more of a dwarf. He is missing his left index finger due to a run-in with a bunch of thugs many years ago.

Sarah MacGowan: Golden hair and eyes. She has a distinctive birthmark on her right shoulder which she tries to keep covered at all times, as if embarrassed by it. She is observant and a bit wary of newcomers. But even though she’s wary, she is well-mannered.

Rose MacGowan: Rose MacGowan is eighteen years old. An attractive young woman with reddish-brown hair and seemingly golden eyes. She fell in love with Elias Farro, and he with her. They have eloped together to a location unknown to their families. Her father offers a reward for the return of his daughter and the death of the man she eloped with.

The family Cheshire

“Outsmart your enemies”

One does not ask how the Cheshire family acquired their status as a noble family, because one does not want to know the answer. A family of alchemists, rogues, and artificers. They are amongst the wealthiest families in Alajana’s Rest.

Their crest is a shield with a diagonal cross. The colors are black and silver. The animal on the shield is an emerald green viper.

Jonathon Cheshire: A tall and slender man with dark, hazel eyes. Copper hair color. He has a red fox named Burga as an companion. His pouch always seems to be filled with money. He has quite some knowledge on alchemy, though it is not entirely sure what exactly he does for a living.

Amicia Cheshire: Long, white hair and green eyes. She is quite an attractive woman and she is well-aware of this. She owns a store in the rich district, specialized in trading gems. Ingredients for various potions can be sold here for a decent price, since she too, has decent knowledge on alchemy.

Ralph Cheshire: Son of Amicia and Jonathon. 23 years old. Reddish brown hair and yellowish eyes. Generally a bit foxlike looks. Nevertheless he is a charismatic man. He speaks in a soft voice. Ralph can often be found in either of the three inns in the city.

Charles Cheshire: Bronze hair and green eyes. 20 years old. He is actually dead. He was accidentally murdered by a child of the family born outside of the marriage. Said child now pretends to be this dead son.

Joane Cheshire: Hazel eyed, white haired. Sixteen years old, innocent looking young girl. She seems like a decent young lady, but her looks should not fool anyone. Joane is quite skilled with a dagger, and her knowledge on alchemy seems to exceed that of both her parents.

Meadowcreek:

Meadowcreek is a small village at a branch of the Esdan River in the Altneyn Vale, and close to the Whispering Woods, in which lies the city Llangar, under which rule the vilage officially falls. It usually is a quiet village where the birth of a sheep is the news of the week. However, the peace has been disturbed gravely now that Goblins raid this once so peaceful place.

Meadowcreek is a very small village with a population of 457 people, all human. It is governed by Leonard Burgeys, a human noble. It has a small square with a few shops and the poor quality inn The King’s Flagon.

Noteworthy people
Leonard Burgeys is a forty-something year old human noble. His wife passed away in an epidemic three years ago. He has two children, a son and a daughter, whom he wishes nothing but the best for. Leonard has sly brown hair which is starting to show traces of grey, brown eyes and a rather distinctive, hawk-like nose. He is a prejudiced man, not too fond of non-humans and seemingly convinced people specialized in fighting have no brains at all.

Nathaniel Burgeys is Leonard Burgeys’ son. He is twenty-three years old and has never in his life experienced any true danger. Hence why the raids of the Goblins creep him out a lot. Not that he is going to admit that to anyone, since he is too proud to do so. He seems rather arrogant towards most people, but secretly he has a kind heart and a big crush on one of the apprentices in the chapel of Pelor. Like his father, he has brown hair and hazel eyes.

Juliana Burgeys is Nathaniel’s sister and Leonard’s daughter. She is seventeen years old and was raised to be a lady. She makes it very clear that she considers herself to be more superior than anyone else in the village, even the head of the temple of Pelor. Juliana is in an arranged marriage with the son of another nobleman, which she is going to meet in a few weeks. Unlike her father and brother, Juliana has black hair, but it is still rather sly.

Alan Fysher is the happy-go-lucky librarian, one of the main priests and mentor of several apprentices. Alan has a love of booze which is bigger than that’s good for him, therefore, he is often drunk and sleeping. When awake and not hangover, he is a happy, optimistic man who loves playing small jokes on people and he whistles.

Isabel Appleby is the head priestess of the temple of Pelor. She stands out due to her unusual eye color, a kind of brown which is closer to orange. Early thirties. She is a tall woman with a fairly calm personality. She likes to collect books and spends a lot of time reading them. She has a broad vocabulary and uses words some people have trouble comprehending. Her opinions on morals are very strong and due to her being so serious, she seems to have little to no sense of humor.

Derieua is a willowy woman. Her hair is slowly turning grey, but her eyes still betray a certain alertness. She seems as if she can notice even the smallest movement in a dark corner. Not very surprising when you know she is a retired assassin (though nobody knows this about her). Nobody really knows why a woman like her would settle to become an innkeeper of such a poor quality inn in a small village like Meadowcreek. Perhaps she was just looking for peace and quiet? Or maybe she has a hidden agenda of her own? Somewhere in the inn, she keeps a small arsenal of exotic weapons and poisons.
